The ten stories in this collection live up to the subtitle of being "Twisty." They all have a surprising twist that makes them each an entertaining read.The first story, "The Chosen One," reads like the prologue to a novel I'd like to read. The 2nd, "Last Call," makes me think of "Arsenic and Old Lace." I think my favorite story is "Need" because I've often wished that ignored or abused children had the power to strike back, and I think the mother gets what she deserves, a real little monster. In "The Garbage Man," the box in the attic makes me think of the heron sword in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, something hidden away in the home and life of a very ordinary man living a humble life . . . until an extraordinary situation arises. I'm not normally a fan of zombie stories, but "The Jump" leaves me with enough interesting questions that I'll have to say it makes me think. And if you're looking for a suspenseful story with a sweet twist, the story of Abby in "The Dark" is perfect! And "Fire with Fire" makes me think of the Dixie Chicks' song about "Earl." In short, these short short stories have enough suspense, irony, and even a touch of sweetness to satisfy any fan of short fiction with surprise endings.I also enjoyed the free excerpt of Misty Mike's upcoming novel, "Black Magic," that came with the download of "Delightful Devilry." I feel for golden-breathed Sarah who sacrifices herself for Walter and want to know what happens to him, so I'm sure I'll be downloading that book when it becomes available. I looked online for more information about "Black Magic" and found this teaser: "Magic doesn't exist. Everyone knows that. And the Dark Order wants to keep it that way." So I'm guessing Walter is part of the Dark Order, which likely has the job of covering up evidence of magic in the "real" world. Sounds a bit like a job for the Ministry of Magic in the Harry Potter novels! But I think "Black Magic" will start with the more serious tone of the later HP novels. But even a hint of being like HP is enough to make me eager for the debut of this author's first novel. Bring it on!

The title for this book is very apt. The stories are compact little gems that are fun to read. My favorite was the first one. Each one just takes a minute or two, so they're a perfect little break from the day when you need it.
A wonderful companion to any long lunch hour. Well done. Looking forward to the upcoming novel.
